The school site council is a group of teachers, staff, parents, and family or community members that work with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets. The members of the site council are elected by their peers: parents elect the parent representatives, etc.

Research suggests that shared decision-making, when done well, contributes to improved school culture and a strong professional community of educators. In addition, effective shared decision-making supports improved classroom practice and student learning. These results indicate that organizations like School Site Councils are integral to school success.
