Welcome to the new 2010-2011 school year. In order for us to have a successful year, I have provided you with an overview of what your child is expected to learn and the rules that are needed for us to obtain our goals.
CURRICULUM
4th Language Arts- Literature program includes Grade Level Literature Units that focus on Reading Comprehension Skills and Strategies, Vocabulary Concept Development, Literary Response and Analysis
Writing program: includes the Step Up To Writing process for both Expository and Narrative Writing
4th Grade Math- understanding the relationship between decimals, fractions and percent, fractions, mixed fractions using parentheses to determine which operation to use first, understanding equations, coordinates of a graph, multi- step problem solving and organizing and interpreting data
4th Grade Science- the earth's surface, matter, magnetism, and electricity
4th Grade Social Studies- Geography -Regions of California and California Missions
HOMEWORK
Homework is given daily, Monday through Thursday. It may consist of (a reading log, a spelling activity, and a math activity or reading activity). Please sign the Student Planner to indicate that you have seen and checked each assignment. Occasionally students will receive Friday, Weekend or a long term project for homework. Homework is a reflection of what is learned during class. If for some reason, an emergency interferes with a homework assignment, please notify me.
TESTS AND QUIZZES
Assessments are given every Monday to evaluate your child's progress. Test dates may be change due to holidays or unit tests.
4th GRADE GRADING SCALE
This is the first year students will have number grades and are eligible for Honor Roll or Principal's Honor Roll.
In the Upper Grade Classes, grades are based on certain criteria as well as percentages. Below is the percentage translation for the number grades we give. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
96% to 100% - 4 (advanced)
90% to 95% - 3.5
85% to 89% - 3 (proficient)
80% to 84% - 2.5
70% to 79% - 2 (basic)
55% to 69% - 1.5 (below basic)
<54% - 1 (far below basic)
4= Advanced 3= Proficient 2= Approaching Proficiency 1= Beginning
DISCIPLINE POLICY
I expect all students to conduct themselves in an orderly manner. All students have the right to learn in a productive and friendly environment. For this reason we have rules. Please review the rules and consequences with your child. Please stress the importance of all students having the right to learn.
