| | The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, authorized by Education Code (EC) sections 52200-52212 (Outside Source), provides funding for local educational agencies (LEAs) to develop unique education opportunities for pupils in California public schools who have been identified as gifted and talented. Special efforts are made to ensure that pupils from economically disadvantaged and varying cultural backgrounds are provided with full participation in these unique opportunities.
At Pleasant Grove School, our GATE program is an after-school program available to all students. Classes offered include dance, drama, choir, art, science, and technology. Information on GATE classes is sent home as classes become available. | |

| | Pleasant Grove School Band
The band at Pleasant Grove is open for 6th to 8th grade students. Our lessons are held every Friday morning during the school day. I'll have one class for beginners and another class for advanced players. I spoke to the students on August 28th about the program, what instruments they can study and what is expected of them. I will teach the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone and drums. I also teach bells, a form of keyboard, and bass guitar. A student who is advanced on six string guitar and can read notes is allowed in advanced band and would play the flute music. These are instruments used in school bands, and music is properly written for them. In class, students are expected to have their instruments and music each week for the lessons. I expect them to practice 5 times a week for ½ hour each time. I will be teaching them to read music and understand many terms and ideas about music. I've been teaching band in schools for 35 years, mostly in Watsonville, and recently in this area. I also published one composition for band entitled “Ming Court”, which you can hear online at www.kjos.com and type in my name Pitter to search. In my spare time, when I have some, I tune pianos.
